Hope for Marmara: Pinna
Hope for Marmara: Pinna
In April 2021, the Sea of Marmara experienced its most intense and largest mucilage event in history. The mucilage grew to massive proportions, covering hundreds of kilometers of coastline. It sank to the seabed, causing damage to the ecosystem and marine life. Mass fish deaths led to disruptions in the food web. Many sectors, including fishing, tourism, and maritime industries, were negatively impacted by the mucilage. To mitigate its effects and restore the Sea of Marmara, efforts have been initiated to reduce pollution load and combat climate change. As part of conservation and prevention efforts, the “Sea of Marmara Action Plan,” consisting of 22 measures, has been developed and implemented.
The presence of Pinna nobilis, which feeds by filtering seawater, offers hope for the restoration of the ecosystem damage caused by mucilage in the Sea of Marmara.
